El Clasico Review: Real Madrid vs Barcelona

- Yosua

Real Madrid shut down Barcelona with a 2-0 win in the 26th week of La Liga. Los Blancos have now the first place in the standings from Barca.

After a 0-0 draw in their first meeting this season, this time around would prove to be a little different. A winning goal launched from Junior Vinicius in the 71’ was backed up with a Mariano Diaz strike in injury time.

The win sees Madrid soar to first place in the La Liga standings, replacing Barcelona. Zinedine Zidane’s army is now leading with 56 points from 26 matches, one point ahead from Lionel Messi and squad.

The Match

Both teams relished the same quick rhythm of the game pace, with Madrid dominating in the beginning, but failing to create chances. The 19' saw drama’,  with both Madrid and Barcelona getting a yellow card right after Dani Carvajal and Jordi Alba's tussle got serious. A chance was made by Barcelona in the 21’, with an Antoine Griezmann shot heading just over the bar.

Meanwhile, in the 37', Madrid got a chance to counter-attack. Vinicius, who controlled the ball, launched a direct shot to the goal, but Ter Stegen saved - Madrid's first shot on target. Almost! In the 39', it looked as if Messi was going to take control of the game. Successfully catching Sergio Busquets assist, the Argentine striker also launched an attack using his left foot, but unfortunately the ball got blocked perfectly by Courtois. This saw the game out until half time; 0-0.

In the second half, Madrid began to dominate the game. Isco started to become ever-so dangerous, with his header stopped by Pique on the goal line. As they continued to press, Madrid finally opened the floodgates in the 71'. Receiving Kroos pass, Vinicus launched a right-foot-shoot from a very tight angle. The ball slightly touching Piques foot, passing through Ter Stegen.

Just two minutes later saw arguably Barcelona's biggest chance of the game. A run from Messi played in by Frankie De Jong, stopped at the death thanks to a flawless Marcelo tackle. This led us into injury time.

Mariano Diaz, who had just came on for Karim Benzema, finished the game after a Carvajal assist. 2-0 to Los Blancos - a superb win.

I am very sad for the loss of my favorite team Barcelona, Barcelona dominated the match well in the first half, but missing chances from some players such as Griezmann and Messi in front of the goal, changed the course of the match, and gave Real Madrid confidence to move forward, and take the initiative again,  This led to the first goal that ended the match.
